Go Coasteering For Rural Free Running
Of all the urban sports to come out of the last twenty years, Parkour (Free Running) is surely among the most spectacular. Having the freedom of the city, the speed and skill to travel all those places just out of reach. This ‘hidden’ aspect is in fact often more appealing than the physicality of the pursuit: I’m very enthusiastic about urban architecture. It’s not just extreme sport, it’s a form of expression. Just as an aside, I would recommend that anyone also interested in these things would do well to check out the name ‘Steve Duncan’. Duncan recently released the fascinating documentary ‘Undercity’, in which he evades the authorities to explore under New York City manholes, tube stations and railway tunnels. But the constant tension of ‘Undercity’ underlies the moral problems of Parkour. Parkour is so frequently trespass, perhaps involving criminal damage and regularly flouting laws aimed to prevent terrorist attack.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing of course. Parkour makes important points about civil liberty. But when it comes to simply testing ourselves, it crosses a moral line that it needn’t cross. You’re probably better of Mountain Biking Wales surely being one of the greatest settings. In fact, Wales is a premier location for extreme sports, and one especially, that has a certain air of Parkour to it. So, Parkour is fascinating as an exploration of the urban landscape, so that angle is somewhat lacking in Coasteering. But as a more than valid alternative as a physical sport, Coasteering has the same emphasis on travelling fast, and climbing to inaccessible, secret places.
Unlike Parkour, there is a more firmly established amateur angle too. Dwarfing the moral problems I’ve always had with Parkour, the sad fact is that I don’t trust myself to not break myself in someway. The use of protective clothing is far more established in Coasteering, where the elements are a hostile factor you’re constantly exposed to. True, you’ll hardly be adventuring with the look of a street-wise youngster, but this is the Gower Peninsula and all the desolateness that applies, not the urban jungle. Challenge yourself and not the law.
