Squad Wall

Surrendering
When bullets fly,
the agility of youth
allows them to dodge
and swerve;
but aged bones and
weary minds
lead us to stand at the wall,
heads held high,
we challenge the squad,
“shoot straight you
cowardous fools,
make your bullet count.”
We close our eyes
and wait.
The battle will soon
be over.
War is for
the young.
Interesting. Acceptance of the inevitable isn’t necessarily surrender. One can argue that every breath spent is a form of defiance…
I think I will surrender to a thoughtfully packaged 100-calorie sleeve of Oreos and ponder.
