Is it good to run an airconditioner when it is cold outside and cool inside?
We have a small airconditioner, its the kind that is in apartments in the wall. I was wondering, is it good to use it even if the inside is cool and the outside is even colder? Also are air conditioner is making wierd sounds now, out side it sounds like popcorn is poping. Is that rare but normal or os that bad? If it is bad, is it from it being used in the cold? It is a modern airconditioner.
When the outside ambient temperature falls below 50′f, YOU SHOULD NOT RUN YOUR AIR CONDITIONER! Most central air and commercial air conditioning systems employ LOW AMBIENT controls that LOCK OUT the compressor from starting in cooler temperatures.
The popping noise or problem you describe, comes from the compressor flooding with liquid, while designed only to pump vapour. Liquid so much harder to compress than vapour, and pumping liquid will burn out the compressor. Liquid refrigerant entering into the compressor is a great industrial cleaner WASHING THE OIL OUT OF THE BEARINGS!
What you are hearing is liquid entering the compressor, and the compressor momentarily seize up from being suddenly so severely overloaded. There is a risk that the compressor could rupture releasing refrigerant that can burn a person severely, and under certain conditions even create a toxic life threatening environment if released refrigerant comes into contact with open flame or even electrical resistant heating! Yes this is caused from using the air conditioner in the cold!
While charging refrigerant into commercial ac/refrigeration systems, we routinely charge liquid, but valve our manifold sets so as to not allow too much liquid to enter the compressor. As the liquid increases in the vapour line entering the compressor, you can both hear the compressor suddenly load up, and even watch on an amp meter the compressor current draw greatly exceed its rating.
A word of advice, DON’T RUN THE AIR CONDITIONER if its colder than 50′f! Also never run the air conditioner any cooler than 15′f below the outside temperature.

Pink Floyd – The Wall $13.95 By any rational measure, Alan Parker’s cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters’s great musi… |
