Walker Game
How did Greg Walker play 163 games for the 1985 Chicago White Sox?
The White Sox only played 162 games 85-77. Walker only played for the White Sox that year. This question has vexed me on and off for 23 years.
Thank you…There was a tie game on July 31 against the Red Sox that only lasted 4 innings. It all makes sense now.
I dug around on the web in Baseball Reference (attached). For some unexplained reason, the game on 7/31/85, in Boston, between White Sox and Red Sox was called at the end of the 7th inning with a tie score 1-1. That game counts for players stats.
Doesn’t indicate: weather, power outage, etc.
On 8/26/85, Boston visited White Sox (looks like an original off day for White Sox). White Sox won 7-6.
Since Walker played in both of those games, along with the other 161 scheduled games in the ’85 season, his statistics (including games played) total 163.
Unlike the NFL and NHL, MLB doesn’t show ties in the standings. So the White Sox record of 85-77 is official – although the stats show they played 163 games..
